Dear pharmacist, do I really need supplements?

We launched a column on our blog to address questions and issues raised by our clients that seeks medical solution in the Keek’s Pharmacy. We hope you find solution through the questions and response we provide.

Dear Pharmacist,

A lot of people have been advising me to take supplements. They say that I don’t even need to be sick to take it. I just believe that I can get all the nutrients I need from food. So I want to know, do I really need supplements?

Our Response,

Here’s the truth. It’s beneficial to take supplements, but it’s even better to imbibe a diet that is able to provide you with all the nutrients you need. But the truth is that, most people can’t. The amounts of fruits and vegetable you would have to ingest to give you certain concentrations of some vitamins and minerals would be outrageous. Here are some hard truths:

  • A lot of people do not eat a healthy diet.
  • Some people only eat the same type and variety of fruit and vegetable thereby limiting the range of phytochemicals they get.
  • Fruits and vegetables begin to lose their vitamin and mineral concentration during storage and cooking. This means that you end up consuming a vitamin and mineral depleted version of the food in the end.
  • Our soils are so depleted in minerals that they provide less nutrient when consumed.

It is extremely important eat a healthy diet, but it is difficult to consume all that you need every day, this is why we encourage people to supplement. And a supplement is not designed to replace a healthy diet, but true to its name, it supplements it.

Just to get the optimal level of 450IU of vitamin E, you have to eat 33 heads of spinach or 80 medium avocados, or 80 mangoes

To get the optimal level of vitamin C you need to drink 10 cups of fresh orange juice, or eat 160 medium apples.

This is why I encourage people to take a good supplements. Here are some benefits of taking supplements:

  1. A lot of people are suffering from undiagnosed micronutrient deficiency.
  2. They provide you with antioxidants that would help mop up free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in your system.

Some symptoms of nutritional deficiency

  • Cracks at the corner of your mouth
  • Hair loss
  • Tingling numbness in your hands and feet
  • Fatigue
  • pallor (pale skin)
  • weakness
  • trouble breathing
  • unusual food cravings
  • hair loss
  • periods of light-headedness
  • constipation
  • sleepiness
  • heart palpitations
  • feeling faint or fainting
  • depression
  • tingling and numbness of the joints
  • menstrual issues (such as missed periods or very heavy cycles)
  • poor concentration
You can see that some of the health issues people face are just their bodies crying out for nutrients

I don’t encourage people to take a lot of supplements without first consulting their pharmacist of doctor. But I want you to understand that there is a lot you can benefit from it.
