Could you becomes healthier by just examining and adjusting your social network? This is probably one of the simplest and yet one of the most powerful things you can do for yourself and your health.
Have you ever gone out with your friends, and everyone is ordering cocktails and burgers or something unhealthy and then you abandon your health resolutions just for this one time so you can have fun with them? So you order some cocktails and some burgers. Even if you’ve not been in this exact scenario, I’m sure you can remember a situation in which your family or friends determined how you lived and what you ate. If you’ve ever stayed with a relative or a friend, you’ll probably end up eating the same things they do. Even in business, if you surround yourself with successful people who are innovating and growing, you will too. There is a saying that “if you have nine friends who are millionaires, you’ll be the tenth”.
We are very social beings. We learn new ways of doing things and living by our interactions with people. It happens so gradually sometimes that we do not even notice it that we’re changing. A lot of the behaviors and beliefs you have now, you learnt from someone. And bearing in mind how much more easier it is to learn bad behaviors than good sometimes we need to be conscious (by conscious I mean awake and deliberate) of the people we choose to surround ourselves with.
Research has shown that our social interactions affect how we consume alcohol and our relationship with our health, our mindset and much more. If you’ve ever tried to lose weight while living or dating someone who is a foodie, it’s like a uphill battle.
I’m not saying get rid of your overweight friends (that’s for you to decide), what I’m saying is be deliberate in the choices you make about whom you spend your time with. Choose people that align with your goals, people that are a living example of what you want to achieve. Just being with them , listening to them talk and watching how the reason will help you adopt healthier habits.
Live healthy. Live happy.
